Before You Add Another Supplement: What to Ask Yourself

Maybe a friend recommended it.

Maybe you saw an advertisement online.

Maybe someone on television said it changed their life.

Or maybe you’re standing in the vitamin aisle looking at a bottle that promises better sleep, stronger joints, improved memory, more energy, or a healthier immune system.

And you’re thinking:

Maybe this could help me.

There’s nothing wrong with that thought.

But before another bottle finds its way into your medicine cabinet, there are a few questions worth asking.

Not because supplements are necessarily bad.

Because anything we put into our bodies deserves a little thought.

What Am I Hoping This Will Do?

Start here.

Why are you considering this supplement?

Are you tired?

Having trouble sleeping?

Worried about your memory?

Trying to improve your immune system?

Living with pain?

Did a blood test show that you’re deficient in something?

Or did someone simply tell you that everyone your age should be taking it?

Knowing what problem you’re trying to solve makes it much easier to decide whether a product makes sense.

If you can’t answer the question, “Why am I taking this?” it may be worth finding the answer before you start.

Is There Evidence That It Helps?

Marketing and evidence aren’t the same thing.

A beautiful label can make almost anything sound healthy.

Words such as natural, wellness, immune support, brain health, detox, and healthy aging can sound reassuring.

But what do they actually mean?

Before spending your money, look beyond the front of the bottle.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist whether there is good evidence that the supplement can actually help with the reason you want to take it.

You don’t need to become a scientist.

You just need to ask.

Am I Already Taking This Somewhere Else?

This is an easy one to miss.

Supplements often contain multiple ingredients.

Your multivitamin may contain something that’s also in your bone supplement. Your immune product may contain some of the same ingredients as another product you’re taking.

Then there are fortified foods and drinks.

Suddenly, what looked like several different products may be giving you the same nutrient over and over again.

More isn’t automatically better.

Before adding something new, look at what you’re already taking.

Could It Interact With My Medications?

This question becomes increasingly important as our prescription lists grow.

Some supplements can affect how medications work. Some may increase the effects of a medication, while others may interfere with it.

This can be particularly important if you take medications for things such as blood clotting, blood pressure, diabetes, heart conditions, seizures, or other chronic illnesses.

It can also matter before surgery or medical procedures.

You don’t need to memorize which supplement interacts with which medication.

That’s what healthcare professionals are for.

Show your doctor or pharmacist what you’re considering and ask:

“Is this safe with everything I’m already taking?”

That’s a much easier approach than trying to figure it all out yourself.

Who Is Selling Me This?

This is one of my favorite questions because it makes us stop and think.

Where did you hear about the product?

Was it recommended because you have a specific medical need?

Or did you hear about it from someone who benefits financially when you buy it?

That doesn’t automatically mean the product is bad.

But advertising is advertising.

A personal story can be compelling, especially when someone says a product transformed their health.

Their experience may be completely genuine.

It still doesn’t guarantee that you’ll have the same experience.

How Much Is This Hope Costing Me?

One supplement may not seem expensive.

But look at the entire cabinet.

Twenty dollars here.

Forty dollars there.

Something for sleep. Something for joints. Something for memory. Something for energy.

Month after month, it adds up.

If a supplement is helping you and you’ve made an informed decision to take it, that may be money you’re perfectly comfortable spending.

But if you aren’t sure why you’re taking something anymore, it’s reasonable to ask whether you still want to pay for it.

Your healthcare dollars matter too.

Does Someone Know Everything I’m Taking?

This may be the most important question of all.

At least one healthcare professional should have the complete picture.

Not just your prescriptions.

Include over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals, herbal products, powders, gummies, teas, and other supplements you regularly use.

Keep a list.

Take pictures of labels if that’s easier.

Bring the information to appointments.

And update it when something changes.

You don’t need to defend your choices.

You’re simply giving your healthcare team the information they need to help keep you safe.

Be Curious, Not Afraid

The purpose of this series isn’t to tell you to stop taking supplements.

It’s to encourage you to treat them with the same thoughtful attention you give everything else involving your health.

Some supplements have an important place in healthcare.

Some may offer modest benefits.

Some may do very little.

And some may not be appropriate when combined with your particular medications or medical conditions.

The answer isn’t fear.

It’s awareness.

So before adding the next bottle, ask yourself:

Why am I taking it?

What do I expect it to do?

Do I know what’s in it?

Could it interfere with something I’m already taking?

And does my healthcare team know about it?

Those few questions may save you money.

More importantly, they may help keep you safe.

Because taking an active role in your health doesn’t mean trying everything that promises to make you healthier.

Sometimes it means knowing when to stop and ask a question.
