Turning Toward the Light: A Checklist for Cultivating Connection in Healthcare

Daily Practices for Compassionate Care

  • Pause for Presence
Take a mindful breath before entering each room. Be fully present for the person in front of you.
  • Make Eye Contact
Create a moment of recognition. Let patients know theyre seen.
  • Use Their Name
Personalize your care. Names matter — they affirm dignity and humanity.
  • Listen Without Rushing
Hold space. Silence and stories both matter.
  • Touch with Intention
A hand on a shoulder, a warm blanket — small gestures build trust and comfort.
  • Honor the Person, Not Just the Patient
Ask about their life outside of illness. A favorite food, hobby, or memory.
  • Acknowledge Emotion
Whether joy, grief, fear, or anger — validate it. Dont shy away.
  • Reflect on One Moment of Meaning Each Shift
Journal or mentally note one connection that mattered. Let it anchor your purpose.

Conversation Starters to Spark Connection

  • What brings you joy?”
  • Whats one thing you wish people understood about you?”
  • Can you tell me about someone whos helped you through tough times?”

Self-Check for Caregivers

  • Am I showing empathy — or going into autopilot?
  • When was the last time I felt connected to a patient or family?
  • Do I need a moment to reset or seek support?

Remember:
You dont need to fix” everything. Often, the most healing thing you can do is simply show up, listen, and care.
